I see some resemblance. They have the same nose -- except his father's is bigger and even more crooked. :) It works on his face though, that's the most important thing. And it looks like Jr. isn't the only one who took his turn in the period pieces.
He does, you're right. In Hollywood, character actor is generally code for someone who isn't good looking enough to play the leading man or lady! Certainly not the case with Jack. I suppose he just took too many roles playing the same kind of character in slightly different situations, that he got typecast.
I read somewhere that Jack takes on many differnt roles on purpose so that he doesn't get typecast, but I think the money people in movies want their actors to be typecasted cause it's a safer bet.
