It was one of the worst-kept secrets in Glasgow, but after months of attempting to keep the ceremony under wraps, This Life star Jack Davenport happily posed for photographers after wedding his actress fiancee Michelle Gomez yesterday.
In blazing sunshine, more than 100 people gathered at St Margaret's Episcopal church in Newlands. In dark blue morning suit and sunglasses, the groom arrived by taxi half an hour before the service with two friends and best man Andrew Lincoln, who co-starred with Davenport in the series as drop-out chef Egg. Guests included Human Traffic actor John Sim and This Life co-star Jason Hughes. Also present was actress Susannah Harker, who co-starred with Davenport in the vampire drama Ultraviolet. She arrived with Iain Glen, who starred alongside Nicole Kidman in the West End hit The Blue Room.
One person notable by her absence was Ayrshire actress Daniela Nardini, who played Davenport's character Miles's feisty on-off love interest in the cult series.
The groom's parents, actress Maria Aitken and Howard's Way star Nigel Davenport, warmly welcomed the disgraced former Tory MP Jonathan Aitken and his two teenage children, William and Alexandra. Aitken, Davenport's uncle, has kept a low profile since his release from prison in January. He served almost seven months of an 18-month sentence for perjury and perverting the course of justice after he lied to a High Court during a libel action against the Guardian and Granada television.
Outside the church gates one young girl was reading a copy of the celebrity magazine Hello!, but there was no exclusive deal here. As Saturday afternoon shoppers stopped to catch a glimpse of the proceedings, the couple happily posed for pictures in the church gardens. They picked the church after driving past on a recent visit to Glasgow.
Davenport recently appeared with Hollywood stars Gwyneth Paltrow and Matt Damon in the Oscar-nominated film The Talented Mr Ripley. His wife, who was brought up in the Shawlands area of Glasgow, has lived in London with Davenport for the past few years. Yesterday she walked up the aisle accompanied by three young bridesmaids.
The 40-minute service was conducted by Reverend Tom Montgomery, and a sonnet by Shakespeare was read out during ceremony.
After a request for privacy, the couple sped off in a blue Rolls- Royce to join family and friends at a secret destination for their reception.
